about

Georgia’s Hog-eyed Man returns with a vibrant album of transcendent old-time music, featuring Clifftop fiddle contest winner Jason Cade, innovative multi-instrumentalist Rob McMaken, and guest appearances by Maxine Gerber (banjo), Brendan Doyle (banjo), and David Bragger (guitar).

Recorded in June 2021--the eye of the pandemic storm--“Kicked Up a Devil of a Row” includes nearly two dozen archaic tunes from the Southern Appalachians.
There are seven duets, mostly featuring the tightly intertwined blend of Cade’s fiddle and McMaken’s lap dulcimer that has come to characterize Hog-eyed Man’s distinctive sound. Cade also plays one tune each with Gerber and Doyle on banjo, both of whom are highly respected but under-recorded masters of the tradition. Doyle’s meticulously precise and percussive playing contrasts with Gerber’s more subtle, rhythmic and improvisational approach.

The album’s midpoint is punctuated by Cade’s haunting solo fiddle
interpretation of a rare western NC version of “Glory in the Meetinghouse.” The other 14 tracks comprise trios and quartets, with McMaken sometimes swapping mandolin or banjo-uke for the dulcimer, Gerber and Doyle alternating banjo duties, and Bragger rounding out the stringband sound on his 1959 Martin D-18.
